Paper #2 Privacy
in the Age of Big Data
For
this assignment, investigate and analyze privacy issues that arise from
engineering work.
1. What
are the biggest privacy concerns/risks we now have regarding the use of
technology? Which specific companies,
practices, products or technology pose the greatest risk? Why?
2. What
are some of the best examples (cases) which demonstrate privacy violations? Discuss specific and interesting cases
related to your thesis.
3. Use
moral theory to explain why privacy must be taken seriously. To what extent is there a right to
privacy? Why? In what ways can we argue
that people are entitled to privacy?
4. How much of an obligation do professional
engineers have to respect privacy? What
can be done to prevent violations?
Develop a coherent, specific thesis that you
can support with fact and argument. Do
not be overly broad and general in your discussion. Be as focused and detailed as possible.
Possible points of focus:
Privacy and
Healthcare Technology
Privacy and
Smart Phones
(Other) Smart
Devices and Internet of Things
Targeted Advertising/Data
Banking
Privacy in the
Workplace
Mass
Surveillance/Facial Recognition
Do some independent research and use at least three
high-quality, in-depth, academic
sources.
Utilize CSU
research databases and online Engineering Ethics databases to find high quality
articles from academic journals. Do
not rely on online news articles and wikipedia.
Don’t be
limited by the sources you choose.
Better sources, better paper!
Explain the details of the issues/cases you discuss.
What decisions
were made in this case? Why did the
participants do what they did?
Were the
relevant decisions/actions moral? Why or
why not?
What happened
leading up to the failure? What were the focal and auxiliary consequences?
What building and professional codes were in place at
the time? Were they followed?
Be specific
about the people, places, companies, decisions, events, etc. whenever possible.
How did
individuals related to the case fail to be professional and/or moral?
Use relevant concepts from class to support your point of
view on the issue.
How do each of
the moral theories and principles weigh in?
Don’t force it, but use moral theory when appropriate to support your
view.
From an ethical
perspective, what is the ultimate conclusion you have arrived at through your
research of the issue? How might this
relate to you personally in the field you see yourself in?
Remember:
Think about what your final conclusion will be what claim
do you want to make? Mention this in
your introductory paragraph.
Use evidence (premises) which demonstrate that your point of
view is right. Draw on what you have
learned about moral principles and theories.
