Assignment 1 requires you to write an essay on the theoretical foundation of global strategy. Objective of this essay is to enhance your understanding of the three underpinning theoretical perspectives upon which the Global Strategy builds, i.e. industry competition, resource-based view, and institution-based view. You need to choose either two of the three theories and examine how they differ as well as supplement each other in assisting firms with forming strategies. Note that in the essay you should not write excessively ‘what’ the theories are; rather, your focus is on ‘comparing and contrasting’ the two chosen theories, as well as identifying the linkages between them, from which an integrated viewpoint can be developed. In your conclusion, you need to provide a table summarising the key comparisons between the two chosen theories [Note: This table is excluded from the word counts]. Importantly, you should put forward logical, not intuitive arguments, and use at least six scholarly references to support them. Examples of companies may be used to illustrate your view but must be brief.
The essay is individual work and has a word limit between 900-1,100 words (excluding references and the table of ‘summary of the comparison’). To complete the essay not only do you need to familiarize yourself with the textbook (particularly the first four chapters) but also search for additional materials from other sources such as books and academic journals, especially the latter which is strongly encouraged at the 300-level. To achieve an A grade and above, a great depth of understanding of the theories is essential.
Additional guidelines for submission of the report
1. a) The format should be Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1.5 spacing, 2.5 cm margins. The table should be singled spaced, 10-size font.
2. b) Use APA referencing styles for both in-text citations and the reference list.
