Why do you think understanding the time value of money is important for a sports facility manager?

1. Many of you have experience in leadership or management in your current or past roles. In your opinion, what is more important for today’s sports facility manager to have, good management skills or good leadership skills? Do you believe leaders must also be great managers (and vice versa)? Does it matter?

2. Select a new stadium or arena. Research the planning process for the facility, and answer these questions: What planning was undertaken for each facility? How long did the planning process take? As you respond to your classmates, discuss how the planning of your selected facility differs from the facilities they selected.

3 Pick a color scheme for a prospective facility. What mood and tone are you trying to set? How do you think your chosen color scheme will accomplish this?

4. Using the green facility management strategies discussed in this unit, consider some of the ways you can avoid waste and loss of revenue. For example, look at the history of sports facilities and how many facilities were initially built near water or other resources, and then examine how the Olympics have evolved to minimize waste from facilities that might not be used after the games. Continue through the chapters, and select a green strategy that can be applied to a situation in the textbook. How does this strategy relate to your selected situation and how could applying it avoid waste and/or loss of revenue?

5. Why do you think understanding the time value of money is important for a sports facility manager? How can this impact the budgeting and financing of a facility?
