UN Report – Human Driven Climate Change Inevitable
A new report was issued in August 2021 giving scientific evidence that we are on a trajectory for a warming planet. However, it also stated that with quick and significant global action, we can mitigate the worst impacts of global warming. What does the report signify in terms of global scientific consensus? What has been the response of the US, China, and other major emitters of greenhouse gases? What was the response of poorer underdeveloped nations situated in the global south who are the least responsible for greenhouse gas emissions? Are these diverse responses a surprise? How do they connect to long histories of colonialism and exploitation? According to the report, what must be done to avoid a planetary catastrophe?

Note: Please use concepts from the course materials (colonialism, capitalism, racism, imperialism, inequality, global political economy, global north and global south power differentials etc) to respond to the prompt. I am not asking you to summarize the materials or answer all the questions above. I am not asking for your unsupported opinions. I am asking you to make your own coherent and well-supported argument about the topic. Cite specific concepts, short quotes, and examples from the course materials (lectures, readings and videos) as evidence to support your own argument.
Your paper should be approximately 1,200 words or about 4 pages. Please pay careful attention to spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Remember that citations are required for both paraphrasing and direct quotes from the texts, videos or lectures. Feel free to cite other books and articles as needed. Include a full list of works cited at the back (not included in the word count).
