Transitioning from working as a registered nurse (RN) to the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) would be challenging since I would be a novice again, the same way I was when coming out of nursing school. One of the challenges associated with caring for pediatrics is recognizing how the family dynamic is essential to growth and development. However, I believe I am in a great position to transition effectively to family nurse practitioner (FNP), even though I do not have experience with pediatric care. The experience I have caring for adult patients, coupled with the knowledge I currently obtain through my advanced degree, would constitute my strengths in executing my role as an FNP. Another strength important to my future role as an FNP is communicating to all patients, irrespective of their age. As Babaei et al. (2016) hold, providers need to connect effectively with their patients to build a trusting therapeutic relationship that enhances outcomes.
As an aspiring FNP, I need to set goals that will enhance my practice. The goals will improve my knowledge as an APRN. Some of the goals and career objectives I intend to accomplish by the end of my course include identifying different illnesses by understanding the signs and symptoms, causes, diagnosis, and management. Knowledge of disease etiology and management allows providers to deliver high-quality, safe, and effective care for their patients (Bathish et al., 2018). Other goals include gaining confidence to provide culturally sensitive care to all patients, improving my cultural competence to serve all patients regardless of their cultural background, and enhancing my clinical and procedural skills.
Educating patients with confidence will feel more comfortable with their primary care provider (Kiernan, 2018). Furthermore, providing culturally sensitive and patient-centered care would enhance patient outcomes as they will feel confident to take part in their care, which will improve adherence to medication and appointments (Bathish et al., 2018). Finally, all the goals and career objectives would be accomplished through the course learning materials, my preceptor, and my colleagues and peers around me.
