Nurses are the largest group of health workers globally; hence they are likely to use a multitude of technologies in their practice today. There is a determined effort by nursing informatics to ensure that nurses are competent to use technology in meaningful and productive ways that benefit both patients and professionals (Kassam et al., 2017). It is critical to continue to fill the education gap that presents with upcoming technology introduced into our profession. Relating to the project topic, I am finding the relation to eLearning would be a fantastic approach as it is the first cost-effective, flexible for nurse’s schedules, and has the ability to train in different modalities. Nurses continue to be approached with upcoming technology that can and will be intimidating to use but has added benefits for the care of patients. eLearning will be able to meet the needs to provide competency as needed. Involved with eLearning is the ability to have explicit content but provide detailed learning experiences. New skills of nursing technology can quickly be obtained by concentrating on the essential processes and having real scenarios to practice the technique of a newly learned skill. Evaluation of eLearning is the user’s demonstration of what was reviewed.
The text book relates to many options the facilities have regarding presentation and training options, and they are focused on cost. Cost is vital to the facility and new technology implementation projects. At what cost to the nurse and staff who will be using this technology on a daily basis? The less in price, the increased possibility you have a less competent employee who will be using this on your client and increased potential chance of error or harm.
Initial training of any employee needs to have a solid foundation of what majority of technology will be used daily in their delivery of care. New employee training will not be based on the lower cost of eLearning but instructor lead training introduced by the information technology and nursing education departments. It is critical to have intense training with the appropriate delivery methods at the start of their career and possibly introduce a new system.
Training needs to be measured whether training a new employee who has never used the health information system or having an in-service for a current employee. Measurements will confirm an accurate understanding of the latest technology introduced into the care that is delivered. Appropriate and effective training prevents patient safety issues and results in confident, independent nursing staff.
