What contributed to the failure of Spain’s 16th century efforts to colonize/civilize Texas?

Largely as a result of Columbus’s voyage (1492) and the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494), the Americas became a sphere of Spanish influence creating immense wealth and power for the nation.

As quoted by Spanish Conquistador Bernal Diaz del Castillo, “We came here to serve God, and to get rich.”

And as long as the Spanish remained in the Yucatan region, that seemed to work out.

However, Texas (or what will become Texas) was a different story.

Remote and hostile, Spanish efforts in Texas were met with much less success.

Why was this the case?

What contributed to the failure of Spain’s 16th century efforts to colonize/civilize Texas?

Some things that you could consider would be the goals of the 16th century explorers of Texas, the problems encountered by the first priest’s efforts to establish missions, Spanish policy re: Texas, problems in Europe, Anglo expansionism, etc.
