Overview
I want you to conduct some Internet research on the causes of information systems
development project failures. You can simply use the Google search engine if you
choose. You are to: (1) perform some research; and (2) write (and turn in) a brief,
original paper (as described below) that summarizes your findings.
Topic
It has often been reported that organizational information systems development projects
that follow the system development life cycle (SDLC) approach, which we will be
studying in this class, ultimately fail and are scrapped during implementation or beyond.
After you do adequate research, I want you to write up a summary of what you have
learned. Please make your summary in the form of a single-spaced Word document
that is AT LEAST 2 1/2 pages long of typed text, but no more than 3 single-spaced
pages long. Use 12-point font and 1-inch margins in your document. Do not have
blank lines in between paragraphs. You are required to submit your typed
assignment through a drop box in Week 4 of our BlackBoard sessions not later than
4:25 PM on Thursday, September 16, 2021. As noted in the syllabus, any assignment
that is turned in more than one week late, that is, which is not submitted into the Week 4
Blackboard drop box by 4:25 PM on Thursday, September 23, 2021, for any reason, will
automatically be reduced in grade by 10 points, or one letter grade. Late assignments
will not be accepted more than two weeks late; that is, they will not be accepted after
Thursday, September 30 at 4:25 PM. Unfortunately, in these cases, a grade of zero will
be assigned for this assignment.
Please note that the relevant topic is information systems development failures,
rather than information systems usage failures. That is, I want your research to focus
on failures attributable to some lack of fulfilling the SDLC process, rather than just
systems that failed but without any accounting for how an inadequate SDLC was
responsible for the failure.

This work, and your research, must be your own. You are not to collaborate with other
TAMIU students in completing this assignment.
Please address each of the questions/topics below to the best of your ability after
researching this issue thoroughly on the Internet. You are required to use 3-4 (at least
three) different sources in your summary. You also must cite the Internet sources that
you actually use (so that I can locate them if I need to) on a separate (fourth) page of
your submitted assignment. Just numbering and noting the URL on this separate
(fourth) page will meet this requirement. You should be aware by now that BlackBoard
has ‘built-in’ plagiarism detection software which will report if you copy directly off of the
Internet or from other students (sorry, I felt it was in your best interest to remind you).
Please address these three specific questions/issues in your summary:
1) Briefly describe the organization and the nature of the information system that failed
(during SDLC development or later). Describe why it failed as specifically tied to some
phase and activities in the SDLC methodology. Addressing this question should
comprise most of your written text, perhaps 1 ½ to 2 pages.
2) After reading various Internet sources, what seems to be the 2 or 3 most important
critical success factors for information system development success (meaning if they
are absent, a failure is likely)? (Your answers to both questions #2 and #3 together
should comprise ½ to 1 page of text).
3) Explain a bit about each of the 2 or 3 critical success factors that you identify in the
first question: Why is each of those 2 or 3 critical success factors important to
information system development success? What it is about each one that promotes
success (or what is it about the lack of it that causes failure)? (Your answers to both
questions #2 and #3 together should comprise ½ to 1 page of text).
Note: There is no one “correct” answer for question #2 although most discussions about
this topic come to similar conclusions. If you have any questions about this assignment,
please ask me before you begin to work on the exercise.
