Close Reading of When I Was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago

The essay needs to have a minimum of 1,000 words. However, the maximum is 1,500 words. If there is a need to go over, just let me know 🙂
It is a “close reading” of When I Was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago. I was hoping to have the “close reading” be centered around the
theme of “identity” or “cultural identity.” In terms of the “close reading,” a dictionary can be used to dive deeper into certain words to examine diction when needed. Besides a dictionary, only the following source that is attached will be used, which is the piece of literature itself.
The other attachment is addional instructions on how to approach a “close reading” in which was given to me.

To brainstorm further on the topic, the following questions may be considered:
What does the text mean?
What social commentary is the text making and how does that allow us a greater insight into the literature?
Does the text manuever towards empowerment over oppression? How and where?
