Give a thoughtful response (150-300 words) to each of the following discussion questions:
In last week’s discussion post, many of you stated that recording yourself speaking is much less stressful since there are more opportunities to try again and make it better. However, a few of you also mentioned that you ended up not liking the retakes because they sounded a little “too” perfect. This is a great catch, as a “perfect” speech can often hurt you more than help you. How do you think this relates to the idea of making an outline rather than memorizing a script? What do you think might be some negative effects of a speech that is delivered “perfectly?” Remember that the audience’s perception of you is what governs your credibility.
What are some specific situations that you have observed/been a part of where a speaker had a negative effect on their audience due to the unethical use of their free speech? How do you think the situation could have gone better? Remember that public speaking can take many forms (Professor speaking to a class, a celebrity speaking to their fans on social media, etc.)
