Overview of Chapter 4:
We are going to discuss the ties that developed between Britain and her colonies. These ties were often precarious before 1763 as Britain was occupied elsewhere.
We will discuss how the Imperial system had loopholes which the colonists willing used to get around policies they disliked before 1763. The colonists also gained more and more control over local matters.

The French and Indian War 1757-1763 had an important impact on both the colonists and the British. After the war the British will begin to focus on their colonies as a way to recover war debts and to make the colonies more accountable to the home government in London.

The only war before 1763 that you need to know is the French and Indian War.

You do need to know the general theme that the French and British were competing for land in the Ohio Valley.

By 1774, 12 of the 13 colonies met to form a Continental Congress. They hoped that London would decide to go back to its post 1763 policies towards the colonies. Both sides wished to avoid conflict. By spring 1775 fighting broke out and although the Declaration of Independence was not signed until July 1776, events were moving the colonists toward separation.
