Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and Ideology: Explain how the film reflects a climate of hegemonic negotiation. Examine aspects of the film that are Ideological and also the ways in which the film expresses an ideological shift. Consider the following: What inequalities are challenged and which ones are not? How does the film depict, metaphorically of course, changing attitudes about race and inequality? What does the film’s ending leave us with: unresolved topics to mull over or the comfort of closure? Explain how and explore the significance.
Get Out and African American Representation: Examine Get Out by responding to ONE of the following:
Representational History: How does the film address stereotypes from the history of African American representation? Determine stereotypes are invoked and whether or not they are repeated ideologically or resisted/overturned/criticized. Discuss specific stereotypes, characters, and moments in the film. Rely on the lecture and the reading for stereotypes; do not base this essay off of “common knowledge.”
Get Out and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner: Write a comparative analysis of the two films, considering the salient issues discussed in regard to each film. Papers should discuss whiteness as a default, white patriarchal masculinity, present/historical stereotypes in African American representation, and decentering whiteness via the black male gaze. Rely on the lecture and the reading for stereotypes; do not base this essay off of “common knowledge.”
Smoke Signals and Native/Indigenous Representation: Write an analysis of how Smoke Signals reflects upon Native/Indigenous history and/or representational history. Examine how the main characters explore their relationship with the past, and contemporary life on the reservation. Consider writing about the use of humor as a means to keep the atrocities of the past in their minds while also keeping them at a distance. Another interesting avenue to explore would be the ways in which Victor and Thomas reconcile their attachment to/distance from American culture and Native/Indigenous culture.
