How does the philosophical view of argument differ from the one you’ve encountered in your daily life?
To what extent is rational argument culturally stigmatized in our society?
Have your learning environments embraced rational argument?
Speaking honestly, to what extent are you guilty of dogmatic or egocentric thinking?
Is it “normal” to engage in healthy, reasonable arguments whereby each party takes the responsibility to justify their claims rather than demand others uncritically accept them?
How important is developing a particular “spirit” of openness and courage to the activity of thinking critically?
What contribution can reasonable argument and dialogue make to critical thinking and the pursuit of knowledge?
What conditions have to be met to foster productive dialogue and conversation?
What is the meaning of Socratic pedagogy, as per Nussbaum, and what is its importance or power?
Is Socratic dialogue used as often as it should be in educational environments?
What role ought “radical openness” and “creative conflict,” as hooks describes them, play a role in healthy dialogue?
After authoring your original post, write two replies of at least 100-words to two different colleagues’ posts. Replies must be substantive. Unoriginal or superficial replies, including those that feature filler language, will receive no credit. Note that greetings and effusive or general praise for a given post do not count toward word-count requirement nor do they take the place of thoughtful engagement with the ideas themselves. Original posts and replies must feature proper spelling, complete sentences, and, generally, correct grammar. Rules of Netiquette must also be followed.
