For this assignment, choose an organization that you are very familiar with to serve as the basis for this case study. This organization could be a current or past employer, an educational institution, or an organization that you are familiar with for other reasons.
This assignment will be 3 pages maximum, double-spaced, using standard fonts and margins. The assignment should dedicate roughly 1 page to summarizing the organization and 2 pages to applying the machine metaphor as outlined below. With so many types of agencies and professions represented in this program, there is no one structural model for the assignment format. Rather, choose the format (traditional academic essay, formal report, memo etc.) that is the best fit for your current profession. Your work will be graded on organization, content, evidence and argumentation regardless of format.
Summarize the organization in a meaningful and succinct way. Make sure to include a brief history of the organization, it’s characteristics and defining elements (1 page maximum).
Building from the module material, analyze how the machine metaphor does and does not apply to this organization. How does understanding this organization as a machine add value and a deeper understanding of its nature and functionality? In contrast, what elements of the organization do not fit well with the machine metaphor? Quality assignments will meaningfully integrate elements from both the assigned reading and the presentation from Professor Sheehy.
