For this assignment we will focus on writing about a text. This kind of writing, textual summary and analysis, will demonstrate your understanding of audience and purpose: Not only will you have to keep your own audience and purpose in mind as you write, but you will have to carefully examine another writer’s audience and purpose. This kind of writing is challenging, but writing about a text is a necessary and important skill to learn and/or improve. It will not only strengthen your critical thinking skills, but it will also prepare you for future college English classes, which likely will require you to closely analyze texts. Your essay must include these parts in this order:
introduction paragraph with thesis statement
1-paragraph summary of the selected text
analysis of 2-3 rhetorical devices used within the selected text
conclusion paragraph.
The essay must be written entirely in third person and provide appropriate citations when referring to the text.
Introduction
Based on our previous discussion of introductions, remember that the introduction should start by introducing the topic of the text you will discuss. Then you will introduce the author’s full name and the title of the text you will analyze. Then work your way down to the thesis, which should include an overview of your analysis of the rhetorical strategies used by the author.
Summary
Your first body paragraph will include 8-10 sentences of summary of the text you have selected. You should NOT quote directly from the text in the summary. Use your own words to accurately convey the author’s message. Assume that readers have not read the text, but cover only enough detail to give readers an overview of the text.
Analysis
When you analyze a piece of writing, you present some kind of claim about the author’s style choices to your readers. After all, every author uses certain strategies to connect with his or her readers. Your analysis will closely examine the writing decisions made by the author and the writing strategies used. You will specifically refer to 2-3 of the strategies In addition to identifying the strategies the author uses, you will analyze how those strategies work to support or enhance the author’s thesis. Explain how the strategy helps communicate the author’s argument to readers and why the author might have chosen the particular strategy. Think about the impact that the strategies might have on the readers’ comprehension of the text.
Here are some questions to consider:
Why did the author choose these strategies?
How are the strategies significant or meaningful to readers?
How are readers impacted by the author’s use of the strategies?
Conclusion
The conclusion should pull your points together for your readers and express the overall significance of your analysis. Show your readers that your analysis reveals something meaningful about the text. Essay must be in MLA format.
