Assignment 1: Content Review
This week, you read Chapter 1 of the course text, which presents characteristics of teacher professionalism. In addition you reviewed the Code of Ethics for Minnesota Teachers and the National Education Association Code of Ethics. Considering these resources, how would you define the characteristics of a teaching professional, and how will codes of ethics shape your professional practice?
Your effectiveness as a teacher will be measured by the learning of the children in your future classrooms. As you participate in the required field experiences throughout this program, you will have multiple opportunities to observe children in a variety of classroom settings and reflect on their learning. In one of the media segments you viewed this week, Dr. Gonzalez-Mena provides pointers for observing children in classrooms. Describe the key elements of effective observation and explain how teachers can use this vital skill to support student learning.
In Chapter 5 of the course text, you learned about the philosophical underpinnings of education. You also heard teachers in the media segments talk about their teaching philosophies and missions. Using the table in Figures 5.1 of the course text, review the four prevailing philosophies of education. Identify the key elements in each of these philosophies. Then choose one of them and describe what kinds of activities you might see in a classroom in which the teacher is guided by this philosophy.
In the “High Expectations” media segment, Dr. Sternberg shares research and personal stories that support the need for teachers to hold high expectations for all students. Why is this teaching practice critical in today’s era of standards and accountability, which was addressed in Chapter 1 of the course text?
