FOOD SUSTAINABILITY

Your employer has been invited to pitch for a presentation-slot at a forthcoming, high-profile food
summit. The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, is convening the “2021 Food Systems
Summit”, to launch bold new actions to transform the way the world produces and consumes food,
and thereby deliver on all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development). The UN argues that transforming food systems is crucial for delivering the
Sustainable Development Goals, each of which relies to some degree on healthier, more sustainable
and equitable food systems. Rebuilding global food systems will also enable us to ‘build back better’
from COVID-19.
Requirements:
Your task then is as follows. Students will use various resources, including academic and professional
journals and websites of repute, to produce a portfolio which contains both a Management Report
and screen capture (screencast) presentation on a specific aspect of sustainable food production
and consumption presenting the key challenges and their solution, based primarily on recent
scientific sources, as follows:
o Management report: Review the latest scientific literature (i.e. produce a literature review
and present as a management report) on what is needed to transform global food systems
(2500 words max);
o Screen capture (screencast) presentation: Produce a brief videocast presentation that fulfils
the precise screencast/videocast requirements below, which recommends bold new actions
to transform food systems in a country of your choice and thereby deliver on their
Sustainable Development Goal commitments (10 minutes and 10 PowerPoint slides – or
equivalent).
You will be assessed on your ability to construct an argument using appropriate academic references
and journal articles, models, theory and practical case examples to illustrate your points. It is
expected that you will incorporate most if not ALL the resources listed below as well as find more to
support your argument. The use of web-based sites and information should be kept to minimum.
Wikipedia references are inappropriate for an academic piece of work and should not be used under
any circumstances.
Format:
o For the management report, adhere to the standards outlined by the Chartered
Management Institute’s Report Writing Checklist (although please note three important
distinctions: 1. You do not need to provide an executive summary/summary; 2. Avoid
headings such as ‘main body of the report – instead, use relevant chapter headings; 3. Do
not present a bibliography – as your report is a review of the literature, it must be
appropriately referenced (see below);
o MMU standard Harvard referencing is essential (A PDF copy can also be found on Moodle);
o Use headings and subheadings to structure your argument;
o Use referenced evidence, facts and figures where necessary;
o Use images and pictures if appropriate;
o In the report, every page must be numbered in the footer. In the header of every page you
must put your student number only. Do not include your name in the assignment – your
coursework will be marked anonymously;
o All figures and tables must be numbered and have a title. The number and title should be
present above the tables and beneath the figures;
