Sociology and Culture in Song
The objectives
of this presentation are (1) to become familiar with some of the
popular issues and sentiments concerning culture and sociology as
this issues are expressed in songs and (2) to provide a stimulus for
considering significant concepts and theories in society, love,
community, domestic abuse, suicide, sexuality, racism, etc, in
society today.
You
and your partner are to choose a song that expresses a sentiment and
this is significant to the study of society and culture. Your song
choice should include among others things:

Your song
choice should express a sentiment that can assist us in understanding
cultural and societal issues

Your song choice should
illustrate a concept or theory that is important in the study of
culture and society, race and ethnicity, social interactions

Your
song choice should suggest a useful question concerning culture and
society.

Your song should illustrate a current or popular
problem or difficulty in today’s culture and society, inequality
(Race, class, gender, religion, etc)
Explain
the relevance of the song to the study of culture and society. What
one principle of these issues as previously noted, culture and
society does this song best express? What is the main point?
Each
team is to make a list of any cultural and societal issues brought up
by a song of their choosing and try to determine what the overall
statement their particular song is trying to make and write a
5-6-page paper on this topic. Each person is to play their song for
the entire class and present a PPT (PowerPoint 4-6 slides) as an
analysis of their song

to be addressed regarding your song:
How
does the background of the songwriter affect the song’s content?
How
does the song address issues of culture, society and community via
commentary? Site specific lyrics, based on the content of the song.
Could the messages in your song be taken the wrong way?
Who
is the audience addressed in your song, in other words; who is the
song being sold? Describe the social class (poor, middle or upper
class, race, gender, etc) your song addresses as well.
Overview:
Music
has a powerful social influence on our society and with us as
individuals. Popular music songs speak to the problems and challenges
people face in creating, maintaining, and evolving and addressing
issues is society in our community.
