What are the shared beliefs that Lennon is drawing attention to?
What is he asking us to ‘imagine’?
What is the symbolism in the video – specifically the contrast between the walk down the foggy path that begins the video and the opening up of the windows to allow light into the room? How does this relate to the act of ‘imagining’?
What does the video suggest about the relationship between the individual and society in terms of the process of social change? Does the individual change the society? Or does society change the individual? What about the video makes you reach this conclusion?
2) Think about the following three historical periods, each of which span approximately 40 years: a) 1900-1939, b) 1940-1979, c) 1980-present.
For each of the periods, list what you think were the three or four most important historical events, technological developments, or other social changes that occurred in the period. You don’t need to do anything more than list the items, but of your list should include a mix of different types of change (i.e., don’t put just technological developments).
Identify which of the three periods you think had the most consequential social change. Write a sentence or two explaining your choice.
