Read Chapter 2: Heredity, Prenatal Development, and Birth (pages 34-63).
Chapter 2 is rich in information about prenatal development. It begins with the 3 periods of prenatal development which are: The Germinal, Embryonic and Fetal period. The germinal, which is the period of prenatal development in the first two weeks after conception, embryonic period which covers the period of two weeks to eight weeks after conception, and the last phase is the fetal period which lasts approximately 7 months and is from about 2 months until birth in “typical pregnancies.”
If you have the National Geographic channel, you can look to see if you can watch, “In the Womb,” as they show it from time to time. It also is a very comprehensive look at the developing fetus. Understanding prenatal development will give us the necessary foundation for the rest of the semester as we look at the developing infant/toddler, preschooler, and school age child in the various domains of development (socio-emotional, physical, and cognitive).
After reading and reviewing the content in Chapter 2, write a letter to someone who is currently pregnant (imaginary or real).
Please be sure to address the following questions thoroughly in your letter:
What type of prenatal care would you advise they have? Why?
How should they care for themselves during their pregnancy?
What things (teratogens) should they avoid and why should they avoid them?
What are some environmental concerns for the expecting mother?
What are some potential hazards? Describe what they are and why they should avoid them.
Your initial post must be two paragraphs in length (approximately three to five sentences per paragraph; 150 words), show your depth of understanding, and write your own words (not the author’s exact words).
