This is the National Sex Offender Public Website. On this website you will find information on sex offenders registered nationally and by states. You can search by offender name, state, county or individual address. You are going to look up offenders in two ways. First, on this page, click on About NSOPW. Scroll down to the next to last paragraph and click the hyperlink “public registry website” and click on Georgia. This will take you to the Georgia sex offender registry website. Accept the terms and you will be taken to the search page. Identify the law enforcement agency responsible for maintaining Georgia’s webpage. Once on the Georgia state page, identify how many sex offenders are currently registered. Also, peruse the listing and provide some examples of the various offenses committed by these offenders. Second, pick another state and conduct the same search you just did for Georgia, finding the same information. Then provide a comparison of the two states concerning the number of registered offenders and the types of offenses committed. Third, go back to the National website homepage and in the Search By Location box, type in your address (127 Alcova Drive, Social Circle, GA) and select the distance of 3 miles. Provide an analysis of what you find, including the number of offenders and offenses. If there are no sex offenders living within 3 miles of you, consider yourself lucky! If there are no offenders within 3 miles, choose another address of a family member or friend (Family member: 240 Murree Drive, Covington GA) and see what you can find.
Also provide an analysis of sex offender registries. Most sex offenders are placed on a registry and many have stipulations regarding where they can live and where they can go, including having to move if another family moves into his neighborhood. Are sex offender registries in general effective? Do the sex offender registries actually violate the 8th Amendment provision against cruel and unusual punishment (many believe that this provides a second punishment — after an offender has served his time, he is now subject to being ridiculed and identified as a sex offender). Do you believe that we need these registries? What else can be done to decrease the amount of sex crimes?
