1. You have just read Gail Godwin’s “A Sorrowful Woman.” I’m sure you noted that the story begins with the fairytale-like phrase, “Once upon a time . . . .” However, the story, which is about a woman’s mental illness and eventual death, is certainly not a fairy tale. Why do you think Godwin began the story with that phrase?
2. You will notice that the story contains both round and flat characters. (I would say that the wife and the husband are round, while the minor characters, the child and the nanny, are flat.) Based on Godwin’s detailed characterization, how would you diagnose the protagonist of the story? What do you think is “wrong” with her?
3. Finally, how would you explain the ending of the story? How do you account for the woman’s final burst of housekeeping energy?
Please remember that you have to put up one initial post of at least 250 words and that you have to reply to at least one fellow student with a post of at least 100 words, and remember that these are minimums; more is usually better.
