For this essay, you will choose one of the characters, Montresor or Fortunato, to write about. Then you will write about three of his character traits – each trait will be in a body paragraph.
Once you have named a trait, you need to write in detail about the trait – using supporting statements from the story text and from the other sources that you find. You may use 1 direct quote from the story, which you will cite in the text of the paragraph, AND you must use evidence from at least two different sources you have found. You must paraphrase and cited this evidence. When you provide the evidence from the sources, you need to discuss/explain that evidence.
SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS FOR ESSAY:
This essay should be about 3-4 full pages of text ( 5 paragraphs: introduction, 3 body and conclusion) plus the WC page – the WC MUST be the last page/pages of the document – DO NOT SUBMIT WC as a SEPARATE DOCUMENT
USE MLA general format and format for citations
Choose to write about either Montresor or Fortunato – only one – then, use the character trait chart for that character and the traits you listed there
Conduct research in the Hinds Library online databases -instructions and videos in previous content pages – to find sources that will help you backup the traits
when you use these sources, you will paraphrase the evidence AND cite it – giving credit to the source, and then provide discussion of the evidence – you ARE REQUIRED to use 2 different sources in each body paragraph
You are Required to use 5 sources plus the short story – the citation for the story is on the content page “The Cask of Amontillado” in WEEK 1
What to include in each paragraph:
Introduction:
hook statement
connection of hook to story/character
name of the story and author
1-3 sentence summary of the short story
general information on the importance of characters
name of the character writing about
thesis statement
BP1, BP2, BP3:
topic sentence – needs to clearly state the trait
introduce the quote
1 direct quote and cite from the short story as evidence of the trait
discuss the quote
introduction of evidence 1 from another source
paraphrase and cite evidence
discuss evidence
introduction of evidence 2 from another source
paraphrase and cite evidence
discuss evidence
wrap up and transition to next paragraph
Conclusion:
restate thesis
reiterate supporting points
make connection between opening and closing statements – again importance of characters
provide insight – this is the “so what” about the topic
You are REQUIRED to use 1 direct quote from the story in each body paragraph – here is how to use Direct Quotes:
How to Cite Direct Quotes:
1. WORD for WORD from the narrative text of a work, you must put the work in quotation marks and cited the work for example: for me, as for others, the internet is becoming a universal medium, the conduit for most of the information that flows through my eyes and ears and into my mind. (Carr 790) NOTICE that you do not have to use an entire sentence it can be part of a sentence REMEMBER the quote that you use should not be longer than 2 full lines of text of the paragraph
2. DIALOGUE is quoted a bit differently in the text dialogue is shown by using quotation marks, you need to use them for this type of quote but you need to add single quotation marks too, for example: Roxane Gay writes They think they know the why of my body. They do not. (Green 823) NOTICE that you use the quotation marks then a single quote mark, the dialogue, and close with the single quote mark and then the regular quotation marks
EXAMPLE ESSAY – here is an example of an essay – you need to read it so that you can see the overall format, how the student included the direct quotes from the story and the evidence from other sources, and the Works Cited page. IMPORTANT: this example was from a class and had different requirements from yours – yours should be 3-4 pages long (does not include the WC) and have a minimum of two different sources plus the direct quote from the story in each body paragraph, and you are to have 5 sources total.
