The preconception health movement in the US hasn’t been as successful as anticipated, largely because providers are not routinely screening women of childbearing age for preconception risks. Since women’s pregnancy intentions and health status can change over time, it’s critical that all providers screen all reproductive aged women during every visit. Effective and equitable preconception care could play a critical role in addressing the maternal mortality crisis in the US.
There are a number of reasons why providers may not routinely screen women for preconception risks (e.g., not enough time, lack of awareness about the importance of preconception screening, discomfort with discussing pregnancy intentions with patients, lack of reimbursement from insurance for these types of visits, bias/racism, etc). Which do you think is most important barrier and what is one way to overcome the problem?
