Literacy Narrative Essay Directions
Write a focused literacy narrative essay
(600-900 words/2-3 pgs)
that
identifies and reflects on a personal experience (or a series of closely related
experiences) that strongly influenced you as a writer or reader. Shape your
reflection as a story, building to a moment of insight to which your readers
will relate. Conclude with a brief assessment of your current relationship with
literacy.
Details may include what you remember about reading, writing, and
technology throughout your life, paying close attention to memories of
learning how to read and write and the texts you read in childhood and
adolescence. You can include both in-school and out-of-school literacy
activities. You can include a variety of forms of text, such different genres
(mystery, historical fiction, non-fiction) and different media forms (books,
magazines, comic books, websites, apps, movies, videogames). Include at
least one image which represents an aspect of your literacy experiences; the
image can be a photograph of you reading, an image of a book cover, a
screenshot of a website or video game, or an image you create such as a
drawing or comic strip. The image should be inserted directly into your
written draft either at the point at which you reference the topic of the image
or at the end of your paper.
Your narrative should:
Convey a main idea by answering key questions: What happened? Why
does it matter?
Tell a story by including the storytelling features- voice, plot, conflict,
concrete and relevant details, shared insight, characters and setting.
Present writer’s angle (point of view or interpretation).
papers should be in a serif font (Times New Roman,
Garamond, Georgia…), 12 point font, double spaced, and including a heading with your name, course section, and the assignment.
