Comparative Study of a Major Mythological Theme:
Each culture and belief system has their own stories that explain the unexplainable. When these stories are compared, we discover that the major theme or more accurately, motif, is the same.
For this paper you are to compare the use of a major theme shared among cultures such as:
The Apocalypse
Virgin Birth
Encounter with Evil
Creation of things like the earth, humans, animals evil, love, soul mates etc.
Resurrection of the Slain Hero, etc.
Fairy Tales
Folklore Stories
Choose two cultures and compare the stories of one of these themes. (i.e. Apocalyptic story of the Norse culture vs. the Indian culture). AVOID comparing and contrasting Judaism, Christianity, and Islam as they are the same stories. For example, if you choose the flood story for any of these, they are ALL the same story from Genesis, the first chapter of the Bible.
The stories can be ancient and/or current. You will want to give a BRIEF summary of each culture’s version of the story. Look for the underlying patterns and motifs as well as the lessons each story teach. Focus on the similarities of the stories as well as the differences. Often times, the differences are in the details but the overall purpose/teaching moral of the stories are the same.
