Questions to address:
The article by Swim and colleagues found that people think they are going to respond to prejudice in certain ways, but that in reality they often react very differently. Discuss a time in your life when you were the victim of prejudice, and how you reacted. Is this what you would have predicted in advance? Looking back on the experience now, are you happy with how you responded, or would you change your behavior?
Swim discusses different kinds of reactions, including questioning, sarcasm, and directly confronting the person. In general, which kind of response are you most likely to use? Do you think this is a good or useful way to confront prejudice for your own life? What about for people in general (in other words, what if the entire world used this method)? What IS the best method for confronting prejudice, in your opinion?
If you still haven’t come to 900 words, you can finish by telling me any reactions or questions you have about the readings or Try It! activity from this week. This is not necessary if you completed the minimum with the questions above.
