Specifically in regard to the Electoral College process, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton were practically at “polar” opposite ends in regards to American citizens and their participation in the election process and government. Jefferson generally believed in the premise of power belonging to the people, so the power of one vote equaling one counted ballot should guide elections. Hamilton did not trust average voters enough to believe that they would educate themselves enough about issues or candidates, so he favored having electors choosing for them. Who would you agree more with, and why?

Our nation’s leaders took great care to develop checks and balances in government through a governing document, the Constitution, and three branches of government, the executive, legislative branch, and judicial branch. History will note that these systems were checked by the Trump presidency and resultant January 6th, 2021 riot at the capital. One segment of our society and culture believe that Trump’s presidency and the protest to keep him as president were no more than valid American protest to maintain American liberty, much like the American patriots that overthrew the rule of Great Britain. Another segment of our current culture and society believe that Trump’s presidency and his followers were extremist who were willing to tear down the very structure that they stood for and defended. There were also racial dimensions to the political and social struggles involved during the election and protest. The vast majority of the protestors were white and aligned themselves as conservatives who believed in a figure who best represented them. Answer these questions; Given the January 6th protest and subsequent changing of state laws that have been interpreted by many as voter restriction, do you think these actions represent a white counteraction to increasing minority presence and power within American society? One could argue this was manifested through large numbers of minority voters who elected minorities or Democrats in government that had traditionally been held by whites?
