Reflection Paper for this course, based on our theories of emerging self-concept reading (Baby) from Week 3 and
our issues in emerging self-concepts readings (Evans et al, Marcus et al, and Hardin et al) from the past two weeks
Guidelines and Grading Rubric
Please answer the following four question sets. Your answers to each question set should be no longer than 250 words, double-spaced and typed. The paper should be no longer than 4 pages. You may answer each question separately (not as an essay). You should provide in-text citations for each of your answers, and attach a References page to the assignment (References are not included in the page count). This assignment is due Sunday, October 3rd by 11:55 pm.
According to the Evans et al article, what is racial socialization? Please be sure to quote and cite the author definitions as introduced in the article. Name and summarize three types of racial socialization, and briefly provide an example of how each type may impact Black youth self-concepts.
According to the Marcus et al article, what is gender variance? Name and summarize two types of uncertainty associated with Sara Marcus’ gender variance that occurred within their [Sara’s] family, and briefly provide an explanation of how two different types of acceptance of uncertainty within the family impacted their emerging self-concept.
According to Hardin et al, what are family-centered practices in relation to caring for someone with a hearing disability in a family? Please be sure to quote and cite the author definitions as introduced in the article. Name and summarize two types of family-centered practices, and briefly provide an example of how each type may impact deaf youth’s emerging self-concepts.
As we can see above, racial socialization, acceptance of uncertainty, and family-centered practices are three ways that families attempt to support emerging self-concepts for children and youth in different contexts. But let’s also think about the communities of which the youth are a part in each article. Please choose one of the articles above, and discuss the impact of communities on the self-concept of the youth in that article. Which communities outside the family are the youth or family a part of in the article you chose? Did these communities seem to provide challenges to the youth’s self-concept, or support? How? Name and discuss two reasons why communities either challenged or supported the youth’s emerging self-concept, in your opinion.
Please post any questions about this assignment to the “Questions for the Professor” thread on Discussion Board.
