Last week we dove headfirst into learning about the methods and ethics of research in biological/physiological psychology. This week, we will be learning about the biological processes of motivation and emotion with an emphasis this week on drugs, addiction, and reward. After reading the assigned textbook chapter (Chapter 5) and resources (see: Week 5 RESOURCES), reflect on the role of the central nervous system and addiction. For example, most abused drugs produce addiction (or they otherwise would not have a potential for abuse) and are often, but not always, accompanied by withdrawal symptoms when the drug use is stopped. What causes tolerance and withdrawal? Why is it that opiates are particularly addictive and dangerous (hint: they have their own receptors). What role to endorphins play in increasing the risk of addiction? Elaborate on the neuropsychological effects of stimulants, psychedelic drugs, and cannabinoids. Articulate the role of the mesolimbocortical dopamine systems in addiction as well. Lastly, explain the linkage between genetics and addiction. What does heredity research show? Given what you will know (through this week’s readings) about the biology of addiction and genetic links, reflect on why is it so difficult to treat alcoholism and even through effective psychological supports and pharmacological treatment strategies (such as agonists, antagonists, and aversive treatments).

Other references that are credible, such as published journal articles and textbooks will be permitted. Sources that lack credibility, must not be used. Submitting a paper that includes sources that lack credibility (such as websites) will be given no credit. The hallmark of scholarly writing is thinking critically by using reliable and credible sources (that are published and peer reviewed). While websites can be used, at least one credible source must also be used as well.
