Write a 7-paragraph investigative report of the “current” status of your topic in the United States. What is the media/news reporting about it?
Provide some background information first that sets the current scene about your topic in the U.S. You should offer some history about the topic and then move your
audience into current reporting in the United States on your topic. What are the major
issues, concerns, or trends about your topic as reported in the recent news?
Use CQ Researcher (CPCC database) and Google News to research and find up-to date facts and opinions on your topic that show you have completed an in-depth study about your topic on the national level. Keep in mind that this is not an
argument; you are not taking a stand on a certain side of your topic. You are offering a
report on what is being investigated and covered in the current news. This should be an
in-depth study, not a “surface” skim, of the topic. You are also sharing what is being done
nationally (legally or otherwise) to address this issue.
Show you understand your college-level audience. This is an objective, formal report
on the topic (not a personal, informal argument). This should be written in third-person
point of view with no slang, contractions, or informal language.
Cite your sources on a Works Cited page- this displays that you understand how to
properly create a full citation and in-text citation using MLA guidelines. It must include 5
sources, preferably from CQ Researcher or Google News.
To complete the assignment:

The essay must follow proper MLA format.
Your report should be in this order:
Paragraph 1: Introduction- Identify your issue/topic; make it clear that this is a national issue (United States); provide some background/history
Paragraphs 2-5: Body paragraphs (4)- Share four national trends or concerns regarding this issue that are being reported on in the news media
Paragraph 6: Legal- Explain how this topic is being legally addressed
Paragraph 7: Conclusion- Summary, final thoughts, look to the future
Works Cited- Incorporate and properly cite at least 5 sources – 2 of them MUST be new sources (not used in the original Issue Selection 10 Sources or Annotated
Bibliography)
