1. How did the Roman Republic develop from the
earlier monarchy to become a stable and effective form of government for nearly
five centuries?
2. Was Rome’s growing control of the Italian
peninsula, and later the lands of the Mediterranean, in the 3rd to 1st
centuries BCE, a result of a policy of imperial expansion? Or was it the result
of a series of individual conflicts with rivals (Samnites, Carthage, Macedonia,
Syria, etc.) without an underlying policy?
3. What caused the collapse of the Roman Republic
in the 1st century BCE? Was it do to the actions of ambitious individuals? Or
were there underlying social and economic forces that weakened the system?
