Intrusions:
You will compare African Americans and one other group (called a “protected class” in legal terms) which has experienced discrimination and fought for its protections and civil rights. You will write a 2-3 page, 1.5 spaced essay comparing two group’s experiences with discrimination and their struggles for civil rights. You need to use short supporting references, quotes, data, or details from the readings on Civil Rights and African Americans (required) and readings for one other group.
Describe the sorts of discrimination and segregation that each of the groups of people experienced. Consider this from the framework of de jure and de facto discrimination. Groups may experience both kinds. Refer to the readings and textbook to offer examples supporting your analysis.
Compare and contrast how the groups’ experiences with discrimination/segregation were similar and unique. Draw connections and comparisons between the two groups’ experiences.
Describe policy responses offered and/or enacted to advance the civil rights of each groups. Compare or contrast these policy responses. (Example: similarities or differences between the Civil Rights Act and the Equal Rights Amendment or ways that one was a response to another). Compare and contrast how successful these policies reforms have been.
* There are many other groups that could be included in this as well. If you’d prefer to bring in LGBT+, Latin(x), Asian American, or another group as your comparison group, do so, but make sure you find important supplemental readings to use in your issue. Ask me if you need help.
