Write a literary review and analysis for Merton’s Strain Theory.
• Provide
background on the theory including its intellectual lineage, main
assumptions, and the level at which it operates (micro v macro)
•
Summary of the theory’s core propositions and hypotheses (i.e., how does
the theory account for crime, delinquency, or victimization?). You
should include at least one diagram depicting the theory.
•
Summarize the empirical validity of the theory based on your review of
the literature. This should include some basic description of the
methods generally utilized to test the theory.
• Offer a reasonable critique of the theory or evidence that does not fully support the theory’s hypothesis.
•
Discuss any possible policy implications (how does this theory help us
create policies to reduce the problem of crime in society?).
• Is
there any way to integrate or improve the theory; this is where you get
to be creative and utilize your scholarly analysis.
Sources: The
textbook and assigned readings are only a starting point. You should
not cite the textbook. You need to utilize original peer reviewed
sources – fear not, we will learn what this means in case you’re
unfamiliar (Wikipedia is not an original peer reviewed source or other
websites are not peer-reviewed sources). Some review articles (where
they discuss the overall findings) are ok, but they may not be your only
source. Feel free to ask me about any questions you may have, and for
any guidance in finding sources.
