Write a mathematics autobiography focusing on key mathematical moments that you have experienced either as a student or a teacher of mathematics. Why do these math moments stand out? What is it about these math moments that continue to resonate, that continue to give you either joy or discomfort? What role did your parents, teachers, siblings, and friends play in shaping your current disposition about mathematics and your mathematical achievements? Reflect back on instances in a math classroom where you felt powerful and/or powerless. Describe the situations and the nature of the interactions it involved and think about these experiences of feeing both powerful and powerless, and how they may relate to your work as a teacher.
Please finish by discussing your level of confidence both as a student and as a teacher of mathematics. What would you say, are you fearing and anxious about doing mathematics? Please read and apply Female teachers’ math anxiety affects girls’ math achievement by Bellock et al and use the Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale (you can find both on blackboard). What are you planning to do to improve your mathematical skills and to overcome your math anxiety (if you think you have math anxiety)? What kind of support would be helpful and what kind of support do students in schools need?
