What views/purposes do the individual characters embody? (Antigone, Creon, Ismene, the Chorus…) Pay attention to the Chorus.
Discuss how Sophocles might be using this well-known story to comment on the role of government, the individual and 5th Century Athens. (Remember that the government was a monarchy, then an oligarchy, but by the 5th C. (when the play was written) it is a democracy; however the play is set in a monarchy.) Why, in Sophocles’ view, is monarchy flawed. What does he see as the solution to the problems posed in Antigone?
