A Clockwork Orange: The Mechanization of Humanity
“What’s it going to be then, eh?” This question sets up the thematic frame of the novel. it asks the novel’s protagonist, Alex, what he is going to choose: good or evil. Anthony Burgess is committed to this problem in A Clockwork Orange. Burgess detest and fears violence as much as we do, but he feels that it is necessary to accept acts of violence if we want to keep up the expression of free will.
After an individual has used their free will to choose to commit sinister crimes against the innocent, the question remains: Is it better to choose the bad or have the good imposed upon you, therefore, robbing you of your free will?
Write an essay that responds to this question. Is it, or is it not, better to have the good imposed upon a person who chooses the bad.
Format: Follow the BASIC OUTLINE TEMPLATE.
A. Introduction: Type up an Introduction with an opening strategy (OS) that grabs the readers attention using a story based example (PE, OPE, HYPO, CS, or HYPO/COMBO) that also sheds light a particular facet of the problem. End the Intro with the Thesis Statement. (Limit 1 to 2 paragraphs)
B. Body: Present the analysis position through 3 topic points. Type up the topic sentence and bullet point the evidence (in this case, only quotes from the primary source material). A minimum of 3 quotes for support are needed for each topic point. Ideally, you provide 4 or 5 supporting quotes

The anti-hero protagonist Alex in Anthony Burgess’ dystopian novel A Clockwork Orange speaks in a teenage slang dialect called “nadsat.” The vocabulary of nadsat is a combination of primarily English, Russian, and invented words.
At first glance, this can feel intimidating and overwhelming; however, it is actually easier than you might think. We learn new words in English all the time, but it is not because we are flipping through the dictionary. When we come across a new word in English, we generally determine a reasonable definition by context clues: the words before and after as well as the sentence preceding and following.
My advice is to do the same when reading A Clockwork Orange. The quizzes are designed for content comprehension, so as long as you understand the basic who, where, when, how, and why of plot, you should do just fine. I will never ask you to define a particular vocabulary word in nadsat.
You want the reading to be fast, not labor intensive, so I suggest reading without the aid of a nadsat glossary. Do your best to determine what seems like the most reasonable definition to a new nadsat word and keep reading. If, however, you stop every time you see a new word, the reading will become tediously slow and unpleasant.
