A comparative study of Cuchulain, the mythological legendary hero, as he is depicted in two versions of the same myth: Lady Gregory’s prose narrative “The Only Son of Aoife” and Yeats’s one-act play On Baile’s Strand.

Students will write a 4 – 4 ½ paper on how the theme of unintentional filicide in Gregory’s portrayal of Cuchulain differs from that of Yeats. You will make a specific claim about the major difference (s) that in your view present the hero in a more, or less, favorable light, and then demonstrate your claim using evidence (observations and quotes) from the text. In other words, how do the authors characterize the hero’s act of filicide and which is more effective and why from your perspective.
