Purpose: To connect the history of social welfare policy and the development of the social work profession with instrumental persons that contributed to both. Making these connections will allow for the identification and understanding of the recurring themes embedded in historical and current social welfare policies.
Historical figures can be chosen from the assigned textbooks or reading materials but students should use a minimum of 4 academic (no Wikipedia) sources other than (or in addition to) the assigned textbooks or reading materials to write the paper. These include peer-reviewed journal articles and books.
Follow the APA (6th ed.) format. The paper is to be 2 and 1/2 3 pages (double-spaced). Use a cover sheet that identifies the historical figure and include your name. The cover sheet and the reference page are not included in the 2+1/2 3 pages.
The content is to include the following:
A general overview of the (historical) context in which the person lived and
worked (10 pts).
o E.g., What were the norms of the time? Were women allowed to work and
vote? Were minorities allowed the same rights and protection?
The values/ideologies which informed their work and motivated them (10 pts).
o Many students struggle with this section. Try to think of values such as freedom, equality, equity, social and racial justice, etc.
Their contribution to social welfare policy and/or the social work profession (10 pts).
