Introductory Paragraph
Attention grabber (often a shocking statistic or image)
Explain the given issue to the reader and provide general background
on your particular topic.
Present the thesis statement (claim) that you are making as the writer
at the end of your introduction (Ex. The new “Campus Carry Law” will lead
to increased fear and anxiety on college campuses.)
The thesis should always forecast the content and core arguments that
you will present in the body paragraphs. A minimum of 5-7 sentences
should comprise your introduction.
Overall, your introduction should answer a reader’s questions of who,
what, where, when, how and why.
Body Paragraphs
The body of the argument essay consists of four major
sections which are:
(1)Presentation of the writer’s argument
(2)the counter argument
(3)Your response to the counter argument
(4)the conclusion
5-7 sentences should comprise each of these body
paragraph
The Argument
Present reasons and evidence supporting your
thesis statement. This section of your essay
should illustrate research and specific in-text
citations from secondary sources (scholarly
books, articles, websites, professional interviews
etc.) in support of your claim. Ex: “Numbers are
declining at a rate of 20%” (Tyler 38). Johnson
states that “the retention rate of students has
improved by 50% over the last five years” (28)
The Counter Argument
A strong argument will possess a counter argument
(opposing side of writer’s position) in an effort to
anticipate the reader’s objections to the writer’s position.
In this section of the essay, discuss possible views and
perspectives that the reader may raise against your claim
or some aspect of your reasoning. Highlight the
advantages and disadvantages of these counter views and
perspectives. Present research in this section as well in an
effort to support your analysis.
Response to the Counter
Argument
In responding to the counter argument of a particular position, you
will refute claims, evidence, and perspectives presented in the
counter argument.
You can also concede to some strengths of the counter argument.
The ultimate goal is to defend your original position as the writer by
highlighting “weaknesses” in the counter argument and illustrating
your position as rational, insightful, and the most well supported of
the two.
Conclusion Paragraph
In the conclusion of your argument essay, it is not
appropriate to simply repeat sections of the introduction or
body paragraphs.
Never introduce new material in the conclusion paragraph.
The most effective conclusion to the argument essay is to
call for some level of change or action in response to the
given issue discussed throughout the essay.
This call for change or action not only creates an innovative
closure to the essay, but can ultimately leave a final
impression of intrigue regarding the topic as a whole.
