Start with invention (idea generating). First think about an activity or product that
you love. Then compare/contrast how it has changed over your life (remember,
no research). Finally, decide when the activity or hobby or product was better—
then or now. Your argument will be that the activity or hobby or product was
better then or now.
Your first paragraph should follow this formula:
My main argument is that _______________ was better when I began. I
have ___ number of reasons to support it. First, ______________________.
Second, _______________. Last, _______________. This argument matters
because _______________________. . Keep in mind
that your research paper topic will need to be same as your argument essay topic
because in your research paper you will just be adding in some outside sources to the
core of the argument you already wrote yourself. Students may change their topic for
their research paper, but they will first have to write and turn in an additional essay on
the new argument with absolutely no information from sources, and that additional
essay will have to earn a passing grade before the students move on to their research
paper.
