What does Kant mean by a Good Will and how does he argue that it is a good will, rather than the consequences of an action that determines the ethical worth of an action? How does Kant get from acting out of a good will to the categorical imperative and treating people as ends in themselves, as the basis for moral decisions? Good Will is a technical term in Kant’s ethics and doesn’t mean the same thing as we usually mean by acting out of good will. Acting out of a good will for Kant is acting out of duty, rather than acting out of self-interest. Having duty as our motive for action is what makes our actions moral.
