A theme is what we think the piece is about. This does not mean plot summary ( what happens in the book) but what lies “between the lines” that is an important idea that is larger than the book itself. A theme can be something a bit broad, for example, you might say one of the themes in the book is “love.” But a theme can also be more specific, for example, you might say one of the themes is “parental love.” You can also think about questions that the book raises that are important questions. But also try to keep these bigger than the book. For example, instead of “Is Klara capable of loving Josie?” you might ask “What does it mean to love someone?”

This discussion is dedicated to brainstorming some “big ideas” from Klara and the Sun. Together, you should list as many themes that you can identify in the book.
