Writing an Abstract
Select the best (most relevant and minimum of 4 pages) article collected during the research phase on the topic you’ve selected [NOTE – The article will likely already have an abstract, disregard the published abstract and prepare one of your own]
Read the article thoroughly and carefully
Without looking back at the article jot down the main points, research questions/problems, or ideas expressed in the article
Now, return to the article and write down the researcher’s key finding(s) and main idea in their conclusion
Center the title Abstract at the top of the document
Add the APA formatted full reference citation above the body of the text
Left align the body of text and write an objective summary of the paper that includes all sections and follows the chronology of the paper.The body must contain these five elements (do NOT break out into sections; keep as a single cohesive paragraph):
Introduction
Problem
Materials, Techniques, Methodology, Study Design, etc.
Results
Discussion & Conclusion (Implications)
Under the body of the text type the work Keywords: list each keyword, with commas between
Abstract Requirements:
Source paper must be a minimum of 4 pages (books, book chapters or journalism articles are not acceptable as the source for an abstract!)
A full citation of the source, preceding the abstract
About 10% the length of the original article or 1 page maximum (250 – 350 words total independent of the length of the full article)
Prepare an objective, concise and comprehensive summary of the article (all major sections of the paper must be included in the summary)
Focus only on the content of the article (there is no need to use pronouns or refer to the authors)
Apply the same style of language found in the original, including technical language where appropriate
