Academic Report For Case Study

CASE:

In the group meeting, three members, J, S & C who engaged in several angry accusations and defensive outbursts in the last meeting, continued to show hostility to each other in their subsequent group meetings. Here were some of the interactions in the meeting:

J: I genuinely believe that that we should move S out of the team. This will help us select another person whose rowing technique is more solid because the person in seat 8 is very important.

C: I agree because S’s shoulder injury has really affected his ability to row well. I have seen him in excruciating pain in our practices. I am happy to take one for the team and move from my seat 1 to seat 8.

S: C, I appreciate your care and concern. But what makes you think being the ‘place kickers’ would qualify you to lead the boat? How can the least important member lead and set the rhythm of rowing (in a tone that suggest sarcasm)? I have been selected to be a rower in seat 8, which means I have the most solid rowing technique! And by the way, my shoulder is perfectly fine! I think J is the problem here! As a seat 7 member, he is supposed to lead the starboard side of the boat which will support me tremendously. I see that J has been slacking off! What is worse is he is now blaming me!

J: Now S, this becomes personal! I am honestly concerned about you and your shoulder injury. And C, please don’t play politics here. You would be the least qualified team member for seat 8!

At that point, Mark the coach intervened and redirected the group meeting to focus on personal reflection. He asked all the team members to write down their personal reflection and also how they could improve their individual performance. Following this exercise, they ended the group meeting. Mark then instructed J, S and C to stay back after the meeting. He told the three of them that he would like to have a meeting with them.
Mark went home and began to reflect on how to facilitate the next meeting. He is also stressed that he would like to re-build the trust among the team, especially among J, S and C.
