Adobe InDesign + Photoshop Magazine Article

This assignment serves three purposes:
– as an introduction to InDesign + Photoshop
– as an opportunity to practice print layout and design
– as a chance to research and write about the future of your desired career field

Students will conceptualize, write about, design, and publish a magazine article that:
o Identifies which profession you are interested in pursuing. Be as specific as possible, even if you’re not
sure about what you want to do. (50-100 words words)
o Contextualizes the profession, including: a brief history of the career field; its place in society (i.e.,
what gives it value); and the kinds of market and cultural factors that influence it. You might also
include some interesting bits of info such as well-known people who have done this as their career,
use storytelling in your article, and/or cite statistics. (100-150 words)
o Presents the educational and professional requirements to get into and succeed in the field. (100-150
words)
o Editorializes your own views about the value of your profession in society. Why is this profession
important not only to your own goals and aspirations, but to society writ large? What value—material
and/or cultural—does this kind of work contribute to those around you? (200-250 words)
o Projects what the future of the career field will look like in 5-10 years based on market trends,
technological forces, and cultural changes. (300-350 words)

Must incorporate the following design elements:
✓ Magazine cover page
✓ Title, subtitle, and by-line
✓ Header + footer (including fictional magazine title)
✓ Formatted text—columns, appropriate alignment
✓ At least five high-quality, non-copyrighted images
✓ At least two Photoshop image effects
✓ No more than two complementary font types

The article must:
✓ be between 850-1000 words
✓ cite at least 3 reputable sources
✓ be well organized and employ transitions
✓ be free of errors at the sentence level (spelling, grammar, punctuation)
✓ make me (and you) think!
