African American Literary

Books talked about in class: Eloquent Rage, The Intuitionist, Playing in the Dark, Daughters of the Dust and Fledgling
In 5-6 pages, argue why and how a text of your choosing (it can be one from class, or one of your choice) expands upon the African American Literary tradition. Think about the more traditional elements of the African American literary canon, and argue why this less-traditional text should be included among its ranks. What aspects of this text makes it non-traditional? Why is it unique? What important contribution does it have to the Black literary canon?
The point of this paper is to show how well you understand the African American Literary tradition, and how contemporary Black writing contributes to it, and expands it. You’ll be judged on how well constructed your argument is, and how well you discuss the text in the context of its genre. For instance, what is the genre’s relationship to Black writing? How does this text fit within, or reimagine that relationship (between that genre and African American literature)?
Outside articles and secondary sources are strongly encouraged, but not mandatory. You must have a Works Cited page though, even if it is just for your primary text.
