Alexander Hamilton wrote in the Federalist Papers No. 68, published in 1788, that “the immediate election should be made by men most capable of analyzing the qualities adapted to the station, and acting under circumstances favorable to deliberation, and to a judicious combination of all the reasons and inducements which were proper to govern their choice.”
The quote sounds as if Hamilton thought an elite group of electors were more qualified to choose than the general public. Please answer the following questions:
1) After analyzing the electoral college map, what stands out to you the most?
2) Does this system undermine the will of the majority? Why? Why not?
3) Should this system be abolished? Why? Why not?
4) Most states (besides Nebraska and Maine) allow winner-take-all. This means that if a candidate wins a state, they get every elector that state possesses. In Nebraska and Maine, the electors may be split. Should states move to a system where the electors can be split? Why? For instance, in Oklahoma our 7 electors may be split (3 for Candidate A and 4 for Candidate B).
