Sewol Ferry (28 minutes)
At the end of high school, students in Korea take celebratory excursions together (work hard, play hard). In 2014, one of these excursions turned into tragedy that impacted the entire country.

After engaging with both (or one), please share your thoughts about how the popularity of SKY Castle and the ferry disaster confirm and/or refute what you’ve read so far in “The Pressure Cooker” and “Drive” about Korea as well as references to S. Korea’s Cultural Dimensions. Please cite the text and quotes from these two events, where appropriate. [2-3 paragraphs]
NB: We are highlighting two phenomena that were suggested by colleagues and friends from South Korea to inform our understanding of Korean education; one is a popular drama and the other was a tragic accident. Please be aware that the Sewol Ferry documentary is very hard to watch as it documents the sinking of a ship, the loss of lives, and the painful aftermath. If you would rather not watch it, we completely understand. Simply let us know that you chose not to watch and use Sky Castle and Chapter 6 to frame your responses here.
