1. On the Forum write a short explanation of what type of Negotiator you are.
1. Remains emotionally rock solid. Picture the image of the eye of the hurricane. Researchers say it’s peaceful and quiet in the eye of a hurricane. Often in my line of real estate business, negotiations can be challenging at times. Negotiators must remember, they are in the eye of the hurricane. They must stay peaceful and quiet. When everyone is freaking out it’s important to remain calm. Keeping your emotions in check is key. It takes professionalism to manage your emotions.
2. Provide a 360 perspective. You must rise above the challenges and negative circumstances. A great negotiator always takes the higher ground approach. It’s important not to lose your perspective. Reiterate to your client what and why you are negotiating. When you do this, it brings everything back to the right perspective.
3. Help keep their eye on the prize. Help clients focus. Get them back to their initial motivation – their why!
4. Allow the process to unfold. Baking homemade bread has a process. So do negotiations. The professional stays relationally connected to their client, not transactionally connected.
5. Constantly seeks common ground. Make a list of what each side agrees on. This list becomes the bridge to common ground.
6. Always be willing to walk away. This is the single most powerful technique and strength of negotiating. An example of this walk away was when I was on holiday in Mexico. At the market, I saw a piece of jewelry and wanted to buy it. However, the vendor was charging too much for it. I offered what I was willing to pay, but he wouldn’t accept it. It wasn’t until I walked away that he started to follow me and lower the price. Finally, half a block away, he accepted my price. This negotiating technique always works, but only when you don’t want the item that badly and are willing to walk away. It takes gumption.
